This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My special education classroom consists of resource students who are determined to learn and strive for success. They are interested in "typical" teenage interests such as Fortnite, Basketball, Instagram, Tik-Tok, and Takis. Oh, and for some reason, Peppa Pig.
These students come from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
As a class, the students face challenges with accessing the grade level math curriculum due to its difficulty. These students require differentiated instruction and always put forth their best effort! Whether it's games like Kahoot or our Friday Community Circles, these students are present and deserve the opportunity to be successful.
My Project
These students come to school full of life and energy. With 6 classes a day, sitting for ANOTHER lesson becomes tiresome. These students require more flexible/comfortable seating options to enhance student engagement and learning. Studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable. Currently, I have a sensory cushion and couch area that seem to be a favorite. With that being said, I would love the opportunity to provide more for the students.
Some of the seating options that will be provided with this project are stools, cushions, and individual floor desks.
All of these options will give my students the opportunity to sit or stand comfortably and move around while they are learning. An individual table that is low to the floor will be used with the cushions during math centers and collaboration time among students. The extended table will provide another option for students who like to stand or students who want to sit on a high stool to learn.
This project would significantly help my students stay engaged in our learning throughout the day. I want them to feel comfortable and "at home" in our classroom. I cannot wait to see all of the things we can do with flexible seating!
