Help me give my students a Plusoptix vision screener. Having this on-site at our school will make vision screenings available for all students, especially special needs students who do not communicate verbally.
Hi, my name is Sara Williams and I have been the school nurse at MPES in Savannah, Georgia for 6 years. I am requesting a Plusoptix vision screener, which can detect vision disorders starting as young as 5 months of age and up. These screeners are way outside of my meager budget but will impact thousands of students for many years to come.
Hearing and vision problems can go unnoticed and, if left untreated, can negatively impact the student's ability to succeed in the classroom.
Hearing and vision screenings improve access to the general education curriculum and increase student success. During my time as a school nurse, I have screened the vision and hearing of approximately 3,000 students. To complete mass vision screenings every year, I typically screen the vision of all pre-k through 3rd-grade students. These screenings are extremely time-consuming and I typically have to enlist volunteers for days to complete them in addition to reaching out to the lions club to donate their time and vision screener.
Having access to a Plusoptix vision screener on-site at the school will make quick screenings available for all students, especially special needs students who are non-verbal or communicate in different ways.
