Accessible Supplies and Building Independence!

My students need new shelves and bins for organizing their supplies so they can safely be reached independently, comfortable seating choices, and fun and engaging morning activity choices.

My Students

Each morning, I begin the day welcoming 16 bright, smiling, and eager students into my kindergarten class. They come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses, coming together to create a diverse classroom community where we learn something new from each other each day!

My students are kind, creative, and eager to learn.

They love to practice the things they're good at, but even more so love a challenge! Their eyes light up when presented with one, their attention focused and their brains fully engaged. I try to foster a can-do, try-try-again attitude when it comes to "the tricky stuff."

My Project

Though my students may be Kindergarteners, I still guide them to be independent thinkers and learners by encouraging them to take responsibility.

Instilling a "can-do" attitude and sense of responsibility is extremely important, even in Kindergarten!

The 12 tray shelf is the perfect height for my students, allowing access to all of their differentiated activities and will help them keep all their materials organized in one command center. The bigger shelf will be used for our math and phonics manipulatives, where students can select and put away activities independently. The black plastic unit will be used for student mailboxes, where they can put finished work, receive important notices, and practice collecting their "mail" to take home in their folders at the end of the day.

The scoop rockers and stools will give students more choices for seating in the classroom, allowing them more independence in choosing the most comfortable space for learning.

My students LOVE hands-on morning activities, and since building creations with wikki stix, snap cubes, and pattern blocks have been a favorite, I've decided to surprise them with legos and play-doh - what better way to start the day as a Kindergartener?

Even "little" items on the list will make a big difference! The sturdy step-stool will be placed in our classroom sink and water fountain area, giving even my smallest students the ability to get a drink or wash their hands independently. Lastly, the strong nylon cords will help ensure our headphones stay working, giving us more time to learn and waste less time because of non-working technology they can't fix themselves.

Providing students an organized learning environment with full access to materials will help them take responsibility for using those materials, encourage them to clean up after themselves, and gain real world skills and independence!
