Help me give my students high interest reading books and an inviting, comfortable environment to get them excited about reading independently. The floor lamps will help with creating a conducive learning environment using alternative lighting options.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach special education in a K-8 building. The students I see are working on math and reading primarily, though a few are with me for other subjects as well.
In my room, we service students from a variety of disability categories with a wide range of abilities in all subject areas.
Many of the older students I have are reading at low levels, which causes them to shy away from silent reading.
My students love to work independently and we need more high interest books that are written at lower levels so my student can feel confidence and learn to love reading!
My Project
These materials will be used to foster a love of reading in my struggling readers. The Orca Currents books offer topics that are of interest to middle school students, but are written at a level that is accessible to my students. The Hank Zipzer series will allow them to read books with a character they can relate to because is also struggling with school. The books in this project will allow my middle school students more options to choose from for independent reading while giving them books that do not look like they are written for younger students.
While providing additional options for texts, we will create a reading area that is inviting to encourage more independent reading.
The cushions, floor chairs, and lamps will provide an area of the room that is calm, comfortable, and inviting to my students.
Please help me foster independence and a love of reading with my middle school special education students!
