Accessible Project Based Learning for MLLs and SWDs

My students need organized centers throughout the classroom to help them engage in the four modes of language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) through easily accessible and equitable project based learning.

My Students

My students come from primarily Latin American countries and live in an extremely low income neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. They are creative, empathetic, and innovative and with the right resources are able to engage in higher level learning. My students are English Language Learners which means they have to work twice as hard in every class: learning the content area, as well as the corresponding language.

My students are the kinds of kids that come into a classroom and love knowing exactly where their binders are while simultaneously enjoying getting a new color eraser when they do well in an activity.

They work hard to engage in a variety of projects and literature throughout the school year. Anything that makes students better able to engage in learning and not worry about other than learning.

My Project

For those of you who funded my last project, you are already aware of the extreme need my students have financially. However, there are other needs that must be met within my classroom setting. I have several students with disabilities or interrupted formal education who are part of my multilingual learning community. In order to provide them with equitable access to education, I have sought materials to assist them in learning. For my students who are not used to sitting for longer periods of time or who have a lot of excess energy, I have added fidget bands for their chairs. This will enable them with the ability to sit for the duration of time they are at a language station or are engaging in an activity that requires sitting. Some students in my classroom have language processing disorders which makes accessing English as second or third language very difficult. For those students I have selected the magnetic dry erase boards with magnetic letters which will provide students with the ability to manipulate words.

It is essential to engage multilingual learners in project based learning in order to achieve full access to a language and to provide real-life 21st century skills.

To do this, I would like to have a project-center using one of the black three tiered wire shelving units, the pipe cleaners, poster boards, and construction paper (as well as other materials I already have purchased). Having a central location for their project materials will be very helpful.

The second black shelving unit will be used for bilingual dictionaries and glossaries and the third will be used for general classroom materials and resources, such as pencils, loose-leaf, and erasers.

The remaining materials will be used in a listening center- the headphones, grey cart, and cassette players.
