My Students

My students are special because their families have committed them to be the next generation of indigenous Hawaiian Language speakers. Our school has many students that come from low income households. Cost of living is high in our state and so public education is usually the route most families have to go. Our school is a school of choice so families choose to send their child to our school. Our school is also on a mission to raise the next generation of cultural practitioners that hold fast to values of conservation while still using innovation. Holding our value of cultural knowledge and protecting our resources is of high value while promoting advancement in economic growth.

One of the goals at our school is to have 80% of our students at grade level in English and in Hawaiian by the 8th grade.

The students I currently teach are 4-10th graders. The classroom has books and other manipulatives, however we are in need of new book shelves as the old one fell apart when it was being moved to install an AC unit. We believe strongly in creating comfortable spaces for academics, especially a quiet space for reading.

My Project

My classroom is small because I service students in small groups due to special supports they need to achieve goals. The students that use the books in my room range from 4-10th grade. All students are allowed to borrow or read quietly in my room if they need to. Other teachers also use the books in my room for resources while teaching lessons.

Our school has only a very small library of books located on campus, therefore we rely heavily on classroom libraries for book accessibility.

Recently one of my bookshelves that held between 100-200 books fell apart because of its age and it was being moved. The bookshelf could not sustain the movement and fell apart.

All the books from that bookshelf are now sitting on other tables in my classroom until I can obtain new book storage. Please help me to support easy accessibility to reading materials by providing dependable and safe moving book storage for my students. All of my students benefit and enjoy coming to my room to read or borrow a book if they want or need one.
