"Without rigor, some students never learn to struggle and fail, and therefore, never learn ways to modify what they are doing until they can do it fully and with success. This can lead to an inability to cope with stress and a fear to try things that are new and difficult.

Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country. The way the children in my class notice and yet don't notice is both vibrant and endearing. All of my students have personal and unique cultures that make them who they are. They also have so many things in common. One of those things is an intense curiosity and love of learning. My students are capable, ready, and they deserve to have the best resources available.

My Project

A portion of my Title 1 classroom is made up of students that are performing at high levels in reading and math. These students have overcome so much during this pandemic. However, at times, I can see that the games and center materials we have available are not proving appropriate challenges for these students. Research on gifted students shows that when they do not regularly encounter challenging material, they fail to develop resiliency. Things come too easy and then later in life, when faced with a challenge, they don't have the tools and experience to meet that challenge head on. The goal of my grant is to provide engaging, but very challenging games to support these students. My hope is that all of the students at my diverse, Title I school will have access to rigorous learning experiences, targeted instruction and supportive materials. Please help me make that happen for them. Thank you!
