Help me give my students a library cart, paper copies of diverse books, and Audible accounts in order to grant book access to all readers regardless of their level or ability.
Lucille Clifton put it best when she said this; “The literature of America should reflect the children of America.” The students in this building are a beautifully diverse population of learners. Every child deserves to see themselves in a book. Our readers crave high-interest books that serve as both mirrors and windows into the worlds of others. Unfortunately, many children struggle to share a reading experience with their classmates because of a disability or a lack of engagement.
Access for all matters.
Many children struggle to read books that are on grade-level, therefore making it difficult to read in book clubs with peers. For a striving reader, the most important thing an educator can do is to remove all barriers to a passion for literature. Children must see this practice as a joy, and sometimes they need an alternative way to access these diverse texts.
Student engagement is the ultimate goal of high-quality instruction, and it is easier to excite striving readers with the texts and materials that they need to grow as individual learners.
My Project
My project embodies my two biggest educational philosophies: the books in a classroom should serve as windows and mirrors to readers, and all readers should have access to diverse books regardless of reading level or disabilities.
Books that represent all children are only impactful if all children can access them!
For many readers, grade-level texts are far above where they can read independently. Audible accounts will allow me to have digitally narrated copies of diverse books available to all students, therefore ensuring that book choice for striving readers does not simply fall within a particular level. Additionally, picture books will support our continued study of the voices of immigrants and their perspectives through accessible text with a great deal of image support to build background knowledge.
A well-organized library that is easy for children to maintain removes the barrier of anxiety surrounding book selection that many kids struggle through. Having a cart and bins to give easy access to children will ensure that texts are in readers hands faster and more seamlessly, leaving as much time as possible for the joy of reading!
