My students need ACCESS content area books and student journals to support the work they do in the general education classrooms and build their academic vocabulary.
My students are amazing, and some of the brightest students out there. They have the unique advantage of knowing two or more languages, and carry skills that are unique to the English learner population. Their problem-solving, grit, and determination make them the hardest-working students I know.
However, many of my students have recently moved to the United States and are in the very beginning stages of learning English.
General education teachers, especially at the middle and high school levels, are sometimes at a loss how to help students access the content they need to, while still taking into account their language-learning needs. My students are eager to learn, but their unique situation can sometimes slow their learning if teachers are not prepared to work with them. I work hard to make sure that these students and teachers are prepared to engage in learning in a manner that is cognizant of their language-learning needs.
My Project
The ACCESS Textbook series is designed specifically for English language learners who need as many opportunities to work with content in a visual and interactive way as possible. These textbooks are designed to support students in each of the major content areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies) in grades 5-12 in learning the essential academic vocabulary that can bridge the gap between confusion and comprehension that so many English language learners face.
These textbooks build language and communication skills while teaching the key concepts and vocabulary ELL students will need to be successful in their core classes.
These books will help me provide resources to support general education teachers at the middle and high school level as they try to engage newcomer students in the content areas.
