My Students
My class is unlike any other! We are a small group of students who make dynamic things happen school and community wide. Rooted in a social justice curriculum, we are a youth led leadership class who work to make transformative changes in the school community.
My student population is incredibly diverse in every aspect of the word (gender identity, race, socio-economic, etc).
My students hail from the unique immediate community around the school. These students live in an often forgotten and incredibly neglected part of the city. For example, our school has never been upgraded since the day it was built in 1963.
Despite this sense of neglect, my students are vibrant and engaging kids who truly love coming to school; they get excited to work collaboratively, and love to share their ideas with their peers and community. My students have selected to take part in a very unique program, where students take on the issues that are important to them and their peers. These students then research these issues (to become experts), disseminate the research to their peers (host conferences, workshops, etc.), and then work as agents of change to make lasting changes and transformations in their school community.
My Project
My students will host a number of conferences for other peer leaders in San Francisco. They will also create and facilitate workshops and support groups for their peers that their school. My students have limited access to technology resources (two computer labs for 1200 students), and will need an increased amount of access to technology to complete research, collaborate with groups, design and execute workshops, and communicate with city leaders as well as their peers.
We need four Chromebook tablets and a protection plan to improve technology literacy and manage school-wide projects. These Chromebooks will allow my students to not only grow as tech savvy, competent students, but they will also feel a sense of confidence in knowing they have the materials to truly put together the best product they can.
These materials will empower my students as youth leaders. One idea for a daily activity that my students will use the Chromebooks to design and manage a website for peers to request wellness, tutoring, mindfulness, and other services from these peer leaders.
These materials will not only change the nature of the classroom for my students, it will change the way they view school.
Students will feel engaged with the transformative work they will be doing. Students will schedule and organize restorative circles for their peers, write grants to help fund their community projects, create wellness and health curriculum for their peers. Having access to this type of technology will remove the angst of how to accomplish tasks and focus on inspiring them.
