Access for Deaf Students

Help me give my students a Deaf friendly classroom and school environment that allows them equal access, conducive learning environments, and tools to be successful in school after a year of limited face to face social interactions.

My Students

I teach middle school students who are profoundly Deaf. They use American Sign Language to communicate and require language support in American Sign Language for all of their classes.

Although my class is small in number, it is big in heart, personality, and eagerness to learn.

All my students are profoundly deaf, and are faced with challenges most of their peers never experienced. However, they do not use this as an excuse and most days they still arrive after a lengthy commute from different parts of the island ready to start their day.

I truly believe advocating for equal access to education and support whether in my classroom or in the general education classroom, is of utmost importance for my low-incidence, high-need population of students.

My Project

We return to in-person learning in a couple of days! Last year, my small class of students attended in-person classes on almost a daily basis. However, we all had to learn how to be flexible, socialize and learn via virtual classrooms, and practice our skills in front of a computer screen. Due to the COVID pandemic my students were part of a small group that were attending in-person, but remained mostly in my classroom with two or three other students for the majority of the every school day.

As a Teacher of the Deaf, I am always looking for ways to empower my students, give them the opportunity to choose, and advocate for equal access.

Doorbell flashers will allow students who are deaf equal access while in their classrooms. Posters that highlight and teach their language in their general education classrooms will allow their peers and teachers to learn to communicate with them in their language (American Sign Language).

Flexible seating, tablet stands, light covers, and magnetic whiteboards will give students the ability to make choices that are best for their learning needs and create a conducive learning environment for students who are deaf. My classroom allows for students to complete their independent work in various locations, safely. I've always been a strong advocate for less sitting, more moving, and these tools will help with just that.

Last year, times were tough for many, having healthy snacks available for students will help fill their tummies so they can spend more time focusing on learning and less worrying about their growling tummies.

Thank you for your consideration in my project. I am excited to return to school, see my students, and provide a safe learning environment conducive to their specific needs.
