My Students

We experience motion every time we move, whether walking, running, bicycling, or riding in a car. We can also set other objects in motion by applying a force. My students want to experiment and learn ways to describe motion in terms of speed, velocity, and acceleration!

I teach high school level physical science to 7th and 8th graders in an urban middle school in Washington state.

My students are a diverse group of learners both ethnically and economically. Over 50% or our school population qualifies for free and reduced lunch. When students enter my science class, we all work together to unravel the mysteries of the Universe.

My Project

Students experience acceleration but really struggle mathematically with the idea of a changing velocity per time interval yielding "distance per second per second." With this equipment, my students will be able to collect and analyze convincing data illustrating the principle of acceleration. From there, students can gain a better understanding of Newton's Laws of Motion (especially the second law). They will also be able to measure free fall and prove acceleration due to gravity. This equipment can even be used to enhance labs involving pendulums, conservation of energy, and momentum.

Without these materials, my students will continue to struggle understanding acceleration.

We use a metronome and draw dots every half second to study velocity but this method does not yield convincing data for acceleration (we are too slow and there is too much variability). Without this equipment, we will have to continue to skip collecting acceleration data and only read about acceleration and free fall in the textbook.
