My Students
The students I teach are interested in improving their lives through education in an area where many families struggle with job loss, underemployment, and poverty. My school is in a rural area in northwest North Carolina where students sometimes find it difficult to see all the possibilities life has to offer. My hope every day is to help students improve the academic skills they will need to be successful in higher education and have a chance at a better future.
My Project
In my social studies classroom, we work not only to master the content outlined in the Essential Standards, but also to gain the academic skills necessary to be successful in all classes and in higher education. In the past, I have noticed that students are more likely to master skills when they have a way to organize their thoughts about the skill and a specific routine to follow when completing a task.
Some of the more difficult academic skills for my students to master have always been the writing skills they need to be successful in a secondary education setting.
Words like thesis and phrases like transition sentences are often foreign to them. They recognize good writing when they see it, but they do not know how to produce it themselves.
After attending a recent workshop on teaching Advanced Placement students and teaching Writing skills, I am excited to try strategies recommended by the presenters using highlighters to focus help students visually represent the different writing components that are necessary to answer constructed response or essay questions.
