Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are a special education classroom, working with students (grades k-5) who have autism. Our students are unique learners with various needs and interests.

Our team consistently strives to aid our students in improving their educational and social capabilities such as communication, social interactions, routines, emotions, and behaviors.

Our classroom has limited materials—especially toys and play is essential for our students. Learning to share, take turns, and get along is crucial.

As a class, we have been cooking once a week. We have made pasta, ramen, pizza, omelettes, pancakes, and ice cream sundaes. Our students enjoy cooking because it is a calm and entertaining activity for them. They get along, follow directions, try new things, and would enjoy having a play kitchen with food that resembles this.

Our students also have “sensory time”, where they use yoga balls and fidgets and a mini trampoline would be a great addition to their sensory time. The trampoline also allows our students to be physically active.

Our students like to build (legos & magnetic tiles), and have interests in animals and cars. The puzzles and flash card pack would help improve their literacy & number skills, as well as their knowledge of shapes and colors.

Our classroom is in need of decor. Some students have light sensitivity so the mini lights would benefit them. They would also like the bean bag and rug and lastly, a vacuum and thermometer to support cleanliness and their well-being!

Our students are from diverse and low socioeconomic backgrounds. They deal with adversity often. But, it is evident that they enjoy coming to school. Our classroom is their safe place. They love being with us and their peers. Getting our project funded would increase their positive experience at school.
