My Students

Every day students are given vocabulary words to learn. They are encouraged to find the words in their everyday reading or to use them in everyday conversation. Mostly, we discuss the previous night's reading, whether through discussion of literary elements or analyzing the diverse topics in the text.

My students are a product of their environment in that most of them have not ventured outside of their small rural community.

They are not aware of different cultural norms or perspectives and struggle to understand diverse world views. Many graduate merely to work on the family farm and therefore are not motivated to succeed in the classroom but are interested in a multitude of topics.

My Project

Students will read these books to help them better understand different perspectives on their world. This text also deals with topics such as bullying and identity which will help many students talk about difficult topics that they might struggle to understand. This book is accessible to many students who would be turned off by classic novels, yet it still pushes them to learn complex ideas.

Students from a rural community may never experience a different cultural mindset from their own and therefore should be exposed to it in a safe environment where they can fully understand it.

Understanding someone else's struggles is often a pathway to help understand one's own struggles.
