This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of the students in my school came to this country from Central America or Southern Mexico within the last 3 years. 90 percent arrived unaccompanied, and 100 percent qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

My students are amazing young people who are overcoming challenges in their lives that I can hardly fathom.

Many have experienced trauma, whether in their home countries, on their travels, or here. Many face economic hardship, and have difficulty with attendance due to various responsibilities outside of school, including working jobs with long night shifts.

My Project

In my math and music classes, I encourage students to use their cell phones for academic purposes when appropriate. This includes practicing English with Google Translate and Duolingo, and practicing guitar, piano or ukulele with Yousician. For these moments, my students need their phones to be charged and ready to use. Of course, the rest of the time, phones are a major source of distraction, as they are designed to be.

Having a charging station in a classroom is a win-win.

Students benefit by getting to charge their phones, and the class benefits as the phones are out of sight, and (at least somewhat) out of mind. When students voluntarily give up their phones to charge them, it means that they are less likely to be distracting themselves and others. The students are appreciative, because they use their phones so often that they are often in need of charging. Many of my students go straight from school to their night jobs, and use their phones for practical purposes like catching the bus, or just relaxing and listening to music after a long day.

I already have a small phone charging station in my classroom, but it is not nearly enough to accommodate the demand.
