Who likes untying knots? Not on our classroom list of "things to learn!" Especially since my students are working on learning to TIE shoes.I have an exciting classroom audio library, but every year I agonize opening it up to them; when cords become an obstacle to literacy, something needs to change.
The majority of my students are bilingual, with English as their second language.
We are in an urban Title I school that is just beginning to embrace technology (money was the big obstacle!). With lower grade class sizes increases, minutes with the teacher have dipped slightly. This presents the challenge of promoting independent activities that support learning, promote choice, support language development, and make kids happy to come to school.
My Project
Wireless headsets will minimize distractions and add valuable minutes that can be spent on enjoying stories, learning from nonfiction books, and building background knowledge INSTEAD of arguing over which headset to use and who tangled up the cord. By sitting right down and enjoying a story, students will increase the number of minutes they interact with text which is one of the most significant predictors or literacy success! Help me students become reading superstars!
The reading gap that has developed in the 21st century is largely a language gap.
All students--monolingual and bilingual students--are in constant need of language exposure. Audio books are designed for optimum enjoyment and will help all readers (from the struggling student to the advanced reader) further his or her skills.
