Help me give my students a set of books about differing abilities and diverse dolls with adaptive equipment (wheelchair, leg braces, guide dog, hearing aids, glasses, etc.).
I teach a diverse kindergarten class. My students come from all different cultures, and several of the students at our school have immigrated from other countries and are learning to speak English. Many of my students are attending school for the first time when they walk into my kindergarten classroom.
My students come from many different backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common- they love school and learning new things!
We have many students at our school with differing abilities and special needs, and I hope to help my students learn more about these topics. I want my students to leave my classroom with an appreciation for how we are all unique and special.
My Project
It is so important to teach students from a young age to appreciate diversity. These books and materials would help me teach my students about differing abilities and help them learn more about their peers with special needs.
The diverse dolls and the adaptive equipment for the dolls (wheelchair, guide dog, leg braces, hearing aids, etc.) will allow my young students to explore these issues in a developmentally appropriate way as they play.
The books will help students learn why some children wear leg braces, how blind people read, what it’s like to be autistic and more. The book set covers special needs; blindness and braille; deafness, sign language and hearing aids; asthma and inhalers; autism; wheelchairs; and leg braces and crutches.
