Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Being a part of this club is like being part of a family".

Because our students have varying learning disabilities it is hard for them to feel like they "fit in".

They cannot join a sports team or a club with the same confidence as many of their classmates. The Caver Coffee Crew Club is made of students who share their same interests and at the same levels as them - in this club they have a sense of belonging.

Together they have come up with the name for their club, designed their own logo, and even came up with a catch phrase - "Gotta Get My Caver Coffee On!" (Caver is the school mascot). We have grown from 6 club members to 16 in less than five months! It is exciting to see how much our students have grown - learning life, social and interpersonal skills. They smile more. They talk more. They SHINE more!

This may sound cliche, but yes, our special ed kids ARE special, each and every one of them. They are good kids. This trip would mean so much to them and the memories they make together will last a life-time! Priceless.

My Project

Between classes, homework, family, and other commitments, there can be a lot to balance. Our 16 special needs students have committed themselves to learning the ins and outs of their own little business - the Caver Coffee Crew Club. From making and designing their own logo, passing the food handlers test, preparing, and delivering hot beverages and snacks to teachers and staff campus wide - it’s been a lot of hard work! They need and deserve an activity outside the school environment where they can enjoy each other’s company without worries.

They say that field trips help to expand people’s horizons and experiences in the outside world enhances learning - both in life and academics.

The following are some of the benefits they will gain from going to Six Flags:

1. They will learn more about themselves.

2. We are already like a family, this will bring us closer.

3. It gives them an opportunity to develop leadership and life skills that will help them become more effective in classroom team projects.

4. They will learn how to engage with diverse groups of people.

5. They will get a break from their studies.

6. We can all have fun! :)
