NOT MORE WORK!!! WHEN CAN WE PLAY???
I teach full-day Kindergarten to a group of 16 students at a Title 1 school in a rural community. Being a Title 1 school means that we have a high percentage of students that receive free or reduced lunch. Many in our community have limited financial resources and as a result, the students' exposure to books, and other educational items are limited.
My students are learning letter names and sounds and are really enthusiastic about it, but are getting bored with the same old worksheet and games. I also have many students who are trying really hard, but are having a hard time remembering all of these new things. By being so young, their attention span is limited, so the more fun an activity is, the better it holds their attention and the more they remember it.
By using ABC phonics squares, I can bring more educational fun into the classroom. I can play many more games to introduce and review letters and letter sounds, and even begin to make simple words. I can use these for whole group, small group, and even independent center based instruction. The ABC squares will also be a great way for my students who are having a difficult time to review. These carpet squares address different learning styles, by allowing my students to see the letter and also a picture that begins with that letter and also something to touch and discuss with a partner. These squares will also control behavior by allowing me to have more control over seating issues, especially since my floor space where we can sit as a whole group for is limited. Therefore, I can vary seating patterns as often as I like.
Your help will further help motivate my students' enthusiasm for learning. I'm very proud they are beginning their academic career full of excitement and motivation. YOU can make all of the difference to my class!!!
