Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching the greatest group of preschool students who are eager to learn, and get to do so through play. My room is an early childhood special education class, with students ranging from 3 to 5 years of age. Our students have eligibilities that vary widely, including:
Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Speech / Language Impairment, and Intellectual Disability (formerly known as Mental Retardation).
We have a happy bunch of students who have fun and are always reaching out to learn about the world around them.
My Project
We are continually building and expanding our preschool program's materials and resources, and this coming year is no exception! With this project, we hope to acquire new materials that will help take our students even further than before, to help prepare them for the big, wide world of kindergarten, and eventually the world! The acquisition of these new materials will support our program's goal of educating students through play-based learning while supporting special needs. The alphabet tubs, alphabet learning locks, and alphabet dough mats will help develop phonemic awareness by finding different ways to play with toys that expose students to our alphabet and reinforce the visual recognition of letters and the sounds they make. Likewise, the magnetic math rods, the fishing math centers, the numeric locks, and the number dough cards reinforce one-to-one correspondence and develop an awareness of counting and help them to develop those skills.
