This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse, first grade, integrated, collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although most students come from low-income homes or homes with limited parental school involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day, ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My class of first graders is some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
My first graders are struggling to retain letter recognition and sounds of both upper and lowercase letters. My plan to help remediate this struggle is to create an ABC kit they can bring home to practice with a parent. I am requesting ABC letter cards for my students so they can practice and review their alphabet. The PlayDoh will be used as a tactile resource for kinesthetic learners to form letters. In addition, we are requesting a new garbage can for the classroom to help keep the classroom clean. Part of the safety protocol during this time of Covid is to eat breakfast and snack in the classroom, which results in mess quickly. The garbage can would help tremendously. We also would like a kid-sized broom and dustpan to clean up messes as it happens. It will help teach them responsibility.
