My students need to explore letters with their senses using kits to sort letters, build words with letter beads and use interactive pens with immediate feedback.
My students need letter activities and materials to build understanding and background in a manner of play. This need to build familiar understanding with letters will result in ensuring they have proficient letter and sound connections needed to read.
Students enter Kindergarten various levels of letter sense, knowledge and understanding for the English language.
I am the English as a Second Language Teacher for Kindergarten at my school, so my classroom often has students learning English while using a variety of different home languages when not at school or prior to coming to school. Most kindergarten students regardless of home language come to school having been exposed to at least the letters in their name. Almost all students need more time to make connections with letter shapes and sounds before learning to read and be aware of print in their daily environment.
My Project
Students will work individually on skills with teacher assistance or direction during small groups with the letter awareness materials being requested.
The Alphabet Sorting Kit will allow students to use tactical and visual learning connections to distinguish the letter differences. The letters of the alphabet look like sticks and squiggles to a child who has not been able to make the connection of differences in letters. These sorting mats will help build this awareness. Lace-A-Word Lowercase Beads will allow students to manipulate and create words they are learning by stringing letters onto a string which is also great for little fingers to build strength. The Hot Dots Complete Set with two Hot Dot pens will create an amazing interactive and self checking activity for students to use to work on letter sounds, vowels, blends and reading words with picture cues upon their own pace. Students will be able to use these materials to meet their needs and grow to the next level of reading
The materials being requested will build letter awareness for all learners.
The students in my class come from a variety of literacy and language backgrounds. This request will allow students who come in strong to continue building words and those just making the connection to learn at their own speed with engaging materials provided by generous donations.
