Nothing makes me smile bigger than when one of my students says, "This was the BEST day EVER!" I work as hard as I possibly can to make each school day "the best day ever" for every child in my class.
I teach a diverse group of 18 brand-new kindergarten students.
We are two days into the new school year and they are already an awesome bunch. My classroom resides in an urban community with a high rate of poverty. Though my students come to school eager to learn, for many of them this is the first time they have ever set foot in a structured learning environment. About a fourth of my class knows little or no English. Very few of my students begin the school year knowing any letters, letter sounds, numbers or even how to count up to ten.
My Project
I'm requesting some extremely unique alphabet games to keep my new learners engaged and excited about mastering letters and letter sounds. It is essential for each of my students to have a strong grasp of the alphabet so that I can help them become confident readers and writers. The games I chose will be really fun for my students because they are specifically designed for their age level. These games will be so fun in fact, some students won't even realize they are "working." The magnetic alphabet puzzle will be an awesome way for students to match upper and lower case letters. The trace and write center will be a much more interesting way to practice hand-writing than a worksheet. And lastly, the launch and learn alphabet/beginning sounds centers will cause a lot of cheering and giggling! Doesn't every kindergarten student deserve the chance to cheer and giggle while they learn?
I believe the high academic expectations for today's kindergarten student should be met with a high rate of fun and energy.
