Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever wondered why some public spaces are more comfortable and inviting than others? Have you ever walked into a Starbucks and just wanted to nest in one of their comfy chairs? I want my classroom to be a space that my students can't help but thrive. A space they never want to leave!

Our school is a Title I school and many of our families struggle with economic uncertainty.

I teach third grade and approximately half of my students are English Language learners (which means a language other than English is spoken regularly at home). It is these EL students who struggle the most with learning to read. It is also these ELL students who need to have many "teachers"! They learn as much from their peers as they do from me! It is critical that ALL of my students learn to collaborate and work together. Our classroom must be a safe and comfortable place to learn and grow.

My Project

Where do you sit when you are reading a good book? In a desk or in a comfortable spot? Studies have shown that students who struggle with reading in third grade often continue to struggle all throughout their school "careers".

It is very important to support my students and encourage them to make as much growth in reading as possible.

This is why I have a "no excuses" daily reading time in my class. Every day after lunch, my students get to choose a spot, we play soft, relaxing music and we just read.

My students would love to have a comfy place to sit and read. Sometimes they choose a partner and read books together. Bean bag chairs will allow my students to choose a spot where they can really settle in and read. I strive to have a variety of seating choices in my classroom and these bean bag chairs will add to that variety.
