My Students
I'm a speech-language pathologist in a DOE special education preschool in the Bronx. My school's classroom ratios are designated for students with autism and special needs (6:1:2, 8:1:2, 12:1:2). Some of my students are not able to express their basic wants and needs and require alternative means of communication (other than verbal expression). It is my job to give them access to a variety of communication supports called Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This can range from using picture symbols in a small binder or pointing to words on a communication board to to using a complex language application with thousands of words. Despite the challenges my students encounter, they have a desire to learn and grow. As a Speech-Language Pathologist working with young students, I believe in using a “learning through play” approach as well as providing my students with multimodal supports for communication.
My Project
Many of my students with autism have difficulty expressing themselves verbally and require alternate forms of communication to make basic wants and needs known and participate in the classroom. They can have great success with the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices also known as AAC, which can be apps on an iPad. Unfortunately, it can take months to a year before my student’s are assessed for a communication device and receive it. The iPad will provide my students with a means to communicate while they wait to get their own device. It will also allow me to determine what communication system best fits the needs of each child and make the process smoother. The stylus will be used to track data during my sessions to monitor growth and progress.
