Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Everyone deserves to have a voice and be heard. Our students are 3-5 years old, and qualify for special education services in the school because they have disabilities. Many of our students don't talk yet, but even though they do not talk, it does not mean they have nothing to say. They have lots of things to say, and they know just what they want to tell us! They are learning to communicate in other ways besides just talking by using signs, gestures, pictures, and technology devices. Last school year, I had a very simple technology device that kids could use to communicate. They loved it!
There were so many smiles and giggles- so much excitement when our students could participate in a class conversation for the first time!
Our device was very simple, but it showed me how the technology empowered kids who had previously had been silent. I was so excited about the possibilities for our students that I enrolled in a summer course to learn to better support our kids to use technology to communicate even more in the classroom. The iPad in this project would help me support the students' communication and apply the new information from my course to give everyone in the class the opportunity to participate in our discussions.
