My Project
One of my absolute favorite things about teaching second grade is that the students are so curious and excited about learning. They want to know EVERYTHING about the world and how it works! Second grade is also a key year in teaching reading; studies show that if a student is not reading on grade level by the end of second grade, they are significantly less likely to graduate from high school. Therefore, my greatest ambition is for every single one of my students to leave my class reading on grade level.
The best motivator for students in improving their reading abilities is to give them books that they want to be able to read.
The books that I have included in this request are books that are highly motivating series for students, and are books that gently transition students from reading simpler texts into chapter books. These books have pictures and small chapters and therefore help students to build their confidence in eventually reading chapter books with longer chapters and without pictures. Additionally, the books that I have chosen are representative of the students that I teach, while encouraging them that they are capable of amazing things.
The cart that is included in this project is intended to assist in organizing my small reading groups. This is a time for targeted instruction for individual students and, therefore, requires many books that target specific reading skills. It will be very beneficial for me to be able to easily keep this wide variety of materials organized.
