Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach children ages four and five years old in a large urban school in the Bronx. Over the years I have noticed that since there has been a push to start academics earlier and earlier, the students in my classes are having difficulty with their fine motor skills. Many are unable to zip their clothing or tie their shoelaces. Teaching handwriting is very difficult.
To combat these problems, I make the students use their fine motor skills to make letters, shapes and numbers with play dough.
This way they are learning their alphabet and numerals and at the same time are strengthening their fine motor skills. I am always running low on Play-Doh and this is the reason I am requesting it. I am also requesting Mr/Mrs. Potato Head and coloring books to also aid in strengthening fine motor skills at school and at home.
The students really enjoy these activities but more importantly, I see an improvement in their fine motor skills which is reflected in their handwriting, in their drawing, and even when tying their shoes. Please help my students develop their fine motor skills in a fun and productive way. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read my proposal.
