This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a public K-5 Elementary school in LAUSD. I refer to my gifted third grade students as "Scholars" and have high expectations for them. Hence, the title of the proposal, "A Year in the Life of a Scholar."
As part of the standards for gifted education, students are to work in an area and complete an authentic product. This project allows the students to work as photojournalists. My students will have access to three digital cameras to capture moments in class, at school functions, and on field trips. Since the cameras I have have limited memory, I am asking for memory sticks for them. This gives my students ample opportunities to capture important moments without running out of memory. With the different photos taken, the students will work together to select pictures for a quarterly newsletter to distribute to parents, administrators, and other classes at school. We will also work with a fourth grade class to create power point/slide show presentations for Open House and burn Cd's for each child to keep for their memories.
The project will benefit my students because they will have to learn how to write like a journalist. They have an audience they are writing for. They will have a sense that writing is not just to turn in for a grade but a way of communication, as are the photos.
The materials that I need for the project are three memory sticks for Fuji Fine Pix A 400 digital cameras, ink cartridges for my printer, paper to print out the newsletters. I need the ink so the students can make master copies of their newsletter.
I want my students to have this experience because as a teacher of the gifted, I am always looking for different ways for the students to express themselves. With the photos, newsletter, and power point presentations, they have a way to communicate to different audiences their experience of third grade. I think the students will be excited to capture their memories and share them with their family and friends.
