Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Inquisitive, engaged, and eager are words that begin to describe my students. Every day they are ready and willing to accept the new challenges that the day brings. Be it long division, an instant challenge, or a complicated text filled with unfamiliar words, my students are constantly striving to better themselves. As a Title I campus, that serves a large population of bilingual and ESL students, my students are constantly looking for ways to bridge gaps and communicate with each other. They see education as a chance to not only improve their own lives but the lives of those around them.

My Project

Sharing a novel as a class is a unique experience. We experience the adventures of the main characters as a shared journey. We can discuss complicated themes and ideas together and explore new ideas in safe ways through the experiences of the characters.

As Neil Gaiman has said, "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." A Wrinkle in Time tells us just that.

It is an easy step into the world of science fiction and yet it is also fantasy. It explores complicated themes of f good and evil, family responsibility, and even the purpose and nature of science.

Sharing this book with my students introduces most of them to a genre they have not experienced before and if it appeals to them opens the door to an entire series where they can continue the journey and experiences with the Murray family.
