My students need high interest books related to the content we learn about in World Geography in order to grow three years in reading in one school year!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
During the year we will study modern China, Rwanda, the Holocaust, women in the Middle East, and many other compelling historical events so that my students can understand the injustices that have existed in their world and their ability to shape the world.
My students are always eager to expand their knowledge.
They compete to check out books from my classroom library and adore sharing their observations about the books as they finish. Many children at my school will carry around three books at a time and they initiate conversations about books with each other at lunch and in class. My students love reading and cannot get enough.
My Project
Students will be able to develop their content knowledge while improving their reading abilities by engaging with the complex texts I have requested. During each unit, I will highlight the selections in our library related to the topic we have discussed, and as students devour the texts they will reflect on how these books contribute to their deeper understanding of our world.
Elie Wiesel said "Information must be transformed into knowledge, knowledge into sensitivity, and sensitivity into commitment." By enriching our classroom with this library, my students will be able to grow into individuals committed to justice and world-changing pursuits.
