My Students

“We need two things to lead a balanced life – a sense of the world and a sense of ourselves," Pico Lyer. Students reading, World Without Fish, by Mark Kurlansky, then raising and releasing shad in the Neuse will empower them to take community action.

Students from our school come from diverse backgrounds with a desire to learn about the world around them.

Our school engages students in rigorous, relevant, relationship-based education. We use experiential, project-based learning that empowers students to build a connected, just and sustainable world. Our school-wide instructional approach has been based on preparing our students for life in an interconnected world. We explore new ways for students to learn about the world and themselves. Teachers, students, and parents have created a dynamic learning environment that truly redefines the middle school experience. Interdisciplinary inquiry-based theme projects that focus on compelling and current issues like sustainable living bring authenticity to the students’ work.

My Project

Students will use this book as a means to study point of view and author's perspective. Students will consider point of view as they study the impact of humans on the environment. Along with this novel study, students will raise shad fry in their classroom to release into the Neuse as part of a collaborative project with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Evaluating point of view, conducting research, raising shad fry, and writing an argumentative text will empower students to explore the issues they care about, as well as provide them with the tools to change how their world works.

By donating to this project, you are providing key support so that students will be introduced to the important partnership between humans and the environment.

World Without Fish, will serve as our anchor text to provide an example of how geographic location shapes personal perspectives. This will inspire our case study based on environmental stewardship as we dig into current, ecological issues in our own backyard.
