Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade at Winton Middle School in Hayward, California. We are a Title I school, with the majority of our students on the free/reduced price lunch program.
The students at my school are bursting with creativity and have very few places to express it. That is why I incorporate art into as many lessons as I possibly can. There is at least one major art project for each unit of study in world history, as well as many other art projects throughout the year.
One of my favorite activities of the year is when the class creates a culture quilt. For this project, the students first create a square that represents themselves and their culture. Then, students glue their squares together on a large sheet of butcher paper. In the end, the students see how much they have in common, as well as how much they can learn from each other by appreciating each others' differences. This quilt becomes a giant symbol representing not only the culture of each student, but the culture of our classroom. This beautiful project is something the students hope to win to take home at the end of the year.
A wonderful way to help the students express themselves would be to supply them with some basics. I would like our classroom to be fully supplied with crayons, washable markers and colored pencils for this and other art projects.
