This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My beautiful seventh graders are among the best and brightest of East Harlem! They come from all different American backgrounds as well as a large immigrant population from the Philippines, Russia, Ghana, Central America and everywhere in between. Their biggest commonality is that most come from families below or at the poverty line.
Despite major inequities in income and opportunity, the students at my school consistently strive for academic excellence and typically score second in their district ( just below the Talented and Gifted screened school) on standardized tests.
They are thoughtful, kind to one another and love math (my subject)!
My Project
I am a math teacher who hates textbooks! Instead, I have developed most of my own curriculum from scratch, which I believe is much more relatable, engaging and rigorous for my students.
Unfortunately, There are over 700 students in my school and only two copiers.
That means I often have to wait days or even weeks to get my copies, and the machines break often or run out of ink/paper. I usually have to come into school early or stay late to use the copier, and sometimes I’ve even had to go to Staples to get copies made.
Although this isn’t directly related to my students’ needs, it would improve the quality of my teaching life immeasurably!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
