Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts." ~ Dalai Lama Our school is located in the heart of the Iron Triangle in Richmond, California. The biggest challenge I face as a teacher is motivating my students to become active agents in their education.

My students are creative, kind, and inspiring.

They come to school excited to gain information. Our classroom culture offers opportunities to make mistakes and try new things. We practice being accepting of others, and loving and supporting one another like a family. Our school is located in a poverty stricken neighborhood, in the heart of the Iron Triangle. The makeup of our school is primarily Latino and African American. Our school lacks adequate funding and many of the resources needed to offer students an equal opportunity to education. Pencils, paper, art supplies and books are hard to come by. Most of the time, teachers purchase these materials on their own.

My Project

Many of the books in our classroom are outdated and in poor condition. I am requesting a class set of From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler with 1 literature guide, a Geronimo Stilton starter pack, 18 different Babymouse books, and 5 different Wild Soccer Bunch books. A classroom library should be a space that inspires students to read. Every student should have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a book and use their imagination to experience a new world.

If these books were donated to our classroom, these students would be given an chance to fall in love with reading and become lifelong readers.

Additionally, a classroom set of books would provide us an opportunity to experience reading as a group and give us a space to share our ideas.
