We are a unique 4-12 span school which offers a seamless educational experience to a diverse student body in a safe environment. Centers for Enriched Studies emphasize creative/critical thinking in all disciplines. Students are assigned to classes according to academic needs and interests. Each Language Arts class consists of gifted/high achieving, average, lower achieving, and special education students. We are a Title 1 school. A majority of our students travel by bus to and from our school, as many of them live outside a 2-mile radius from the school. The student body is integrated with a 60% combined minority and 40% Anglo student population.
My Project
This year my fifth grade English students will read the novel "Wonder", the book that inspired the Choose Kind movement. The themes in this novel involve being kind to others, accepting others' differences, and learning to be yourself. This story is about Auggie Pullman, a boy who was born with craniofacial abnormalities, who was homeschooled for most of his life. Auggie will be attending a private school for the first time, and my students will learn the truth of Auggie's journey and what it means to them as individuals. Each section of the novel is told through the point of view of a different character, which helps readers better understand the choices made by some of the characters.
