My Students
As a Speech-Language Pathologist I help preschool through 6th-grade students with communication needs learn to express themselves better. My students are learning their first words and sentences, learning to speak more clearly, controlling their stuttering, learning to use technology to speak, learning to better understand their teachers, and learning how to talk to others.
Everyone deserves a voice and my students are working to find theirs.
If you've ever struggled to find the words to express yourself, you can imagine the frustration my students sometimes feel. But then, when they learn a new word, say more than they've ever said before, have their first conversation with a parent, master a new sound or achieve any other goal they were working toward, their faces light up and they get this certain smile that shows they know they did it ---PAYDAY!
My Project
The speech room at our school houses two speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with students experiencing communication disorders; disorders exacerbated by remote learning and missed therapy sessions due to quarantines. Now that we are back to in-person learning, we often are running 2-3 speech therapy groups in the same room at the same time. And speech therapy is noisy!
Adding a sound-absorbing room divider to our room will create 2 new, quieter, and less-distracting spaces for our students to practice their skills and achieve their goals.
This room divider will help students feel like they are in their own space with their own SLP without distractions from the other group going on a few feet away in the same room. They will have more confidence in trying out their emerging-but-imperfect speech skills because they will have more privacy from other students. Without the divider, students have to practice so quietly that they often can't be heard, and in speech therapy you HAVE to be heard. This room divider will make it possible for students to speak louder without disrupting others. This will mean more practice, more feedback, more success.
