My Students

My high school students are a very mixed bunch, depending on the class. Some of them love all things related to science! Others do not want to touch science with a 10-foot pole. The 11th and 12th grade AP biology class is full of kids who want to do something in a science field as a career. They come excited to to do any activity put in front of them. But not all of my students are so eager. In order to pass high school, everyone must take biology as a sophomore (or freshman), like it or not!

My goal every day is to challenge and inspire all of my students, from the science geeks to the science-phobic.

This world is an amazing place, full of happenings and wonders more awesome than any video game or YouTube personality. Their eyes light up when they see a fun demonstration or participate in an experiment. They want to know more- they are learning.

And they love to learn with technology. Anytime a computer or iPad is used in a lesson, they are more interested and more willing to jump in with both feet.

My Project

These digital microscopes would help kids see a whole new world! The microscopes unit is an all-time favorite. Being able to see tiny creatures in pond water, plant cells, their own cells, chemical reactions happening up close, and looking at everyday objects in completely new ways! Students just love using a microscope.

Kids get so excited about what they find, they want to take a picture.

They struggle to put their phones up to the eyepiece and get blurry images at best. But these digital microscopes will connect directly to a computer, where they can capture high-quality images to enjoy and share (Instagram post! #ScienceRules!).

Taking pictures will also open new doors for learning. Students will be able to label what they see. They can share and discuss with other groups. They will be able to compare and contrast what happens under their microscope over time; before, after, and during experiments.
