Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a two-way immersion classroom where over 75% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school has a great, diverse population that includes kids from a variety of socioeconomic levels and backgrounds. Our school is located in the most high-needs area within the city and some students feel safer at school than at home.
My students are thoughtful, fun, caring, and full of energy!
They have a desire to learn but need help to stay motivated and engaged in their learning. Like many classrooms, we have a wide range of ability levels and there is a need for students to be able to express their thinking in different ways. The more chances they get to try new ideas, the quicker they will meet or exceed personal, and academic proficiency levels!
My Project
We work in small groups on a daily basis to practice and reinforce the concepts that we are learning. This new dry-erase table will provide a special new learning place in our classroom and allow me to set up a "teacher time" station for each group to meet with me to extend their learning. It will be used multiple times a day. I will be able to use it in math in order to easily model problems for students to see as I teach, and then follow as they try to do this on the table themselves. In writing, students will use the whiteboard surface to help other classmates brainstorm ideas for a given topic when working together, as well as practice their vocabulary, complex punctuation, prefixes/suffixes, and challenging spelling. In reading, students will have a fun space to practice their word wall words by challenging each other to write sentences and unscramble their partners' words.
This dry erase table will give my students a comfortable working space that will contribute to their academic success, and keep them engaged and enhance their performance.
