Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an ESL teacher in a high needs NYC middle school. The school is classified as Title I. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders the English Language and we need a classroom whiteboard.

My students have to overcome many language barriers, learn the English language, and required school concepts with little or no help from their parents.

Their parents are unable to help them in the educational area due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language. My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings. Unfortunately, another thing that my students have in common is that their families are struggling financially. Within my school, the majority of the students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. Supplying my students/classroom with this whiteboard would be a small step, but it would give us one less obstacle to overcome.

My Project

Dry erase boards are generally very helpful in the classroom because they allow one to present information in a very animated fashion. Not only will I be able to write down information as I speak, I can sketch pictures, note important points, and last but not least, I can color code important details or information. Dry erase boards are taking the place of black boards in many school rooms because they are more versatile and allow the teacher more options. Using markers does not generate the dust that comes from using and erasing chalk. Many of my students are asthmatic and allergic to chalk dust and this is an awesome alternative.

I desperately need a white board for my classroom.

The markers also do not smudge like chalk, which is a benefit. Whiteboard ink markings are less susceptible to external factors, such as water, because the ink adheres in a different manner than chalk does to chalkboards. Dry erase boards are also easy to read from a distance, where some people struggle in a classroom environment to read a blackboard. My students and I would greatly appreciate and take huge advantage of a classroom whiteboard.
