Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a 2nd grade teacher in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. My students are very interested in learning about animals. We just completed a unit of study on mammals and, as a culminating activity, we took a trip to the zoo. The kids had a great time and are still talking about and drawing pictures of things that they saw and did at the zoo. In a few weeks I will embark upon a unit on ocean life with the students. I would like to take my students on a trip to the New York Aquarium as a culminating activity for this unit of study. Trips really help the kids apply the knowledge that they have learned from books, class discussions and projects. They also provide the children with life experience that they otherwise may not get. Most of my students don't get to visit places such as aquariums, museums, and zoos outside of school due to their families' lack of expendable income, or time constraints due to parents' jobs. I would like to give my students many opportunities to gain some meaningful life experience, and see what wonderful places and things NYC has to offer.
