My Project
The garden is the perfect place for STEM learning because science is everywhere you turn! Plant science is an often overlooked field that is of the utmost importance because without plants, the human population would cease to exist. In our class, we use the raised beds to plant vegetables, herbs and flowers for many purposes. We learn proper seed propagation techniques, soil pH, optimal production raised bed gardening, and will be adding a cultural component this year with the cultivation of native Hawaiian kalo. We will be learning how to perpetuate the ancient techniques of raising this Hawaiian staple crop using the moon cycle versus traditional planting techniques.
STEM does not only encompass lab work or computers -- the garden is one of the best ways to learn hands-on science.
We love being able to get our hands dirty and see our accomplishments when the seeds we plant transform into food that we can harvest, prepare, eat and share. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to teach them lessons they can use outside of school and into adulthood, but also how to be kind, respectful and functional human beings. Learning outside in the garden helps them to learn all this and more.
