My Students
Our school's mission is Strong Readers, Strong Writers, Strong Problem Solvers! Our students strive to meet this goal.
We have over 1200 enthusiastic learners at our school who are diverse in many ways.
We have students from all different backgrounds and cultures. We have students with many different passions and interests, from STEM areas to theater and music. We have students who are learning English as a second language and those who are learning foreign languages. In fact, our ESL population has doubled in the last year and continues to grow. Our school has programs for life skills students and social skills programs for students with autism. About 27 percent of our students are economically disadvantaged. Forty-four percent of our population is considered "at-risk," but these labels do not stop our students.
My Project
Our library has an extremely small picture book collection. It is less than 1 percent of our entire collection. But there are so many ways to use picture books with teaching and learning even for middle schoolers.
Picture books help kids fall in love with reading.
Picture books can be shared out loud and build a community of readers. Reading picture books can be nostalgic and enjoyable. They are also a great way to introduce literary elements and analyze author's writing. It is important to have a wide variety and selection for students to be able to self-select their reading materials. Reading picture books as older readers gives a new appreciation and understanding to middle school students.
More than half of students from low‑income households
