Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For several years, I have worked diligently with first grade bilingual students from all areas in Central America, and this year, I will be working with many first grade refugees who have endured the challenges of immigration at such a young age; they missed a secured and structured year of kindergarten and are facing challenges with literacy and communication.
We will work together to restore faith and turn fears into hope; become strong independent learners with aspirations for the future; and build a foundation of determination, academic success and a joy for learning.
In my classroom, young learners are challenged to explore and find their own styles of learning and use their knowledge to learn about their new world, especially through literacy. I try to inspire my first graders to see that their future endeavors have already begun. I want them to dream and have high hopes - early on.
My Project
I work with very young students who are constantly worried about their parents being deported, and they bring those fear and shy voices into the classroom. The students tend to speak in a very low voice and shy away from fun academic learning. With hands-on materials, the students are invited to participate and help lead with the teacher. They get to hold the tools and make connections that may be too difficult for them to visualize on paper. With the microphones, they can be heard across the room, and the more we practice, the more confidence they gain.
With the warm atmosphere we create throughout the school year, they begin to share their writing and their thoughts, and they begin to realize that they have a voice; a wonderful and beautiful voice.
They learn to put the fears of life behind them, and they begin to enjoy their academic life. They become storytellers, little teachers, and of course, sometimes even little jokesters, and they start to grow into strong children because they learn to find their voice in their very difficult life.
