Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade teacher in the South Bronx. Our school is located in one of the top ten poorest congressional districts in the United States. We serve three halfway houses for mothers recovering from drug use and several shelters. We are a very needy school. I would love to take my students on trips related to the fourth grade social studies curriculum which revolves around New York State history. However, our school policy is never to request money from already economically challenged parents to pay for trips. Last year, DonorsChoose funded a proposal for my class to visit the Statue of Liberty. It was an amazing experience for my students as well as myself. Most of them had never even been on a boat before and they were very excited! They recognized many of the artifacts and pictures on display at the Ellis Island Museum. This is the kind of learning teachers strive for everyday. The students learn best when the activities are hands-on. Most of our students do not get opportunities to visit these sites with their families. And, like all children, they love being outside of the classroom. I want them to be able to take advantage of all the amazing resources New York City has to offer. Please help make an outing possible for this class of inner city kids. THANK YOU!
