My students need a visit from the BioBus! The BioBus travels around the city to provide immersive laboratory experiences for kids...all taking place on a re-imagined school bus! Please help encourage my students' love of exploration!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an exceptional group of 7th, 9th and 10th graders who come from a very diverse group of neighborhoods around New York City. The majority are from Brooklyn, and many are low-income, as is the bulk of our school.
As students go, this particular group is incredibly inquisitive and thoughtful.
For the first time in my career I will be teaching students for a second year in a row, and I could not be more excited. The excitement they showed as they participated in labs, grappled with the "big questions" of each unit, and the dedication they showed to inquiry-based thinking was inspiring to see.
My Project
The BioBus is an incredible resource for students in New York City. With a school bus re-imagined as a hands-on laboratory, students are provided with an accessible and un- intimidating location for exploration. On the bus, scientists share their expertise through hands-on experiences, allowing students a first-hand look at the scientific discovery process.
There is no better way to build student confidence and awareness in scientific inquiry than by allowing them space and time to explore!
I never see higher engagement in my classroom than when we are carrying out lab activities, and the opportunity to work with advanced materials and equipment will only enhance their experience.
