My students need to see an owl up close because we have studied them and learned so much! We can't get to the zoo, so with this project, the zoo will come to us.
Few of my K-5 English Learners have been to the zoo. We have studied owls in depth and would like to meet with and talk about the Nashville Zoo's Eurasian Eagle Owl named Archimedes.
My students are English Learners grades K-5 who attend a Title school in a rural county.
Almost all of them live in poverty. We are working hard to improve their reading and writing abilities; my first DonorsChoose.org project was to bring the zoo to our classroom through animal books. My students are reading them voraciously! To motivate them even more, though, experiential, hands-on learning is a must. Having a beautiful, majestic owl visit will bring all that we have studied to life and let them see first-hand why these birds (and other wildlife) deserve our respect and protection.
My Project
The real deal, one of the world's largest owls, inspires awe when he is taken out of his travel box and sits on the well-gloved arm of his handler. The first time he turns his head around to look at the students with his enormous eyes or lets out a hoot, they will be even more amazed. They will realize how wonderful a creature an owl is. The best part of the visit, though, will be listening to the kids ask really good questions based on what they have studied and what they still want to learn. It lets them feel like scientists!
Have you ever stood right beside a beautiful owl with an enormous 5' wingspan and have him look you directly in the eyes?
If not, you should give it a try! It is an incredible feeling, one that you will never forget. In the meantime, help my students know how incredible it is to experience wildlife up close!
Archimedes the Owl and Robin Mahoney, Nashville Zoo
(Archimedes is an Eurasian Eagle Owl who is an ambassador for the Nashville Zoo. He and his handler, Ms. Robin Mahoney, will come to our school for a visit. We have studied owls and really want to see one up close and personal! )
