This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an inner city, High-5 through eighth grade elementary school in a very high poverty area of a large metropolitan school district. Many students have their first experiences with science during their time with me. One unique aspect to our school is that we serve a large population of Somalians that are new to our country.

The majority of my students are English language learners from both East Africa and Latin America.

Our free lunch status is ninety-eight percent or higher. My teaching position is one of a resource or specialist teacher who serves over 650 students throughout the school year. One of my personal joys is teaching these students year after year as they transition through their elementary grade levels.

My Project

With Virtual Reality (VR) our students will explore the scientific world in ways never possible before. Of course hands-on experiences and field trips are the best ways to study science with Covid-19 and social distancing these activities are now prohibited. This is where VR comes in.

The Oculus VR experience creates immersive multi-sensory science, social studies, and just a "Wow" experience for our young scientists.

As an educator, I have investigated the profound learning that students will benefit from with this new technology. I dream of a reality where my students can go to Mars and hike around Olympus Mons, "swim" around the Great Barrier Reef, walk through the Louvre and soar through the sky like an eagle. With VR technology our students will have many, many more deliberate, meaningful, and purposeful learning experiences through the years.
