We are just beginning the second year of our orchestra program--the only one in the county. My students work really hard and have grown tremendously as musicians in the short time I've taught them.
My students are very deserving but don't always have the same opportunities students from other schools do.
We are in a very poor county (one of the poorest in the nation), and the arts are where the students at our school shine. With the right amount of community support, our little school orchestra can be a place these students can grow and learn.
We have recently begun to acquire our own instrument inventory. The kids are thrilled to have new instruments and have been working hard so far this year.
I have seen first-hand how participating in an ensemble such as orchestra is making a difference in students' lives.
All students can really benefit from the opportunity to participate in this ensemble. Many of them have bad home lives and they consider our class as a "family" that they have within the school.
We are slowly but surely building our instrument inventory. The gift of a violin could help up to three students in three different classes, as well as numerous other students for years to come.
